Our StarSkate program is designed for skaters who have progressed beyond Advanced CanSkate and are ready to elevate their skills to the next level. Focused on figure skating development, StarSkate provides a structured pathway for skaters to refine their technique in areas such as jumps, spins, edges, and footwork.

With levels Star 1 through Gold, skaters in the StarSkate program have the opportunity to develop both competitive and recreational figure skating skills, with personalized training from experienced, certified coaches who support each skater’s individual goals and aspirations. The program lays the groundwork for future champions in singles, pairs, ice dance, and synchronized skating by introducing participants to the key elements of figure skating.

Whether they are aiming for performance excellence or preparing for competition, the StarSkate program offers a challenging and inspiring environment where skaters can grow in skill, confidence, and artistry.

Please note: Once a skater progresses to StarSkate, coaching fees are no longer included in the registration fee. Skaters will receive one on one private coaching each session as well as group coaching. Generally skaters receive 10 to 15 minutes per session of private coaching. Our coaches will invoice you directly monthly for these coaching fees. The fees vary depending on the coach and the time can vary depending on the particular class size that day or if there is an upcoming competition or assessment the skater is working towards. These coaching fees can be discussed directly with your coach as your skater advances to StarSkate.

StarSkate Requirements

All StarSkate participants must have completed CanSkate Stage 6 or an equivalent to enroll. Skaters require their own figure skates.

StarSkaters are also required to volunteer as a Program Assistant (PA) to assist with the PreCanSkate and CanSkate skaters, to help guide, teach and inspire them. All of our StarSkate skaters are required to help PA throughout the season as a part of their registration agreement. One day a week skaters are required to PA for one session per week and two or three day a week skaters are required to PA for a minimum of two sessions per week.

StarSkate Program

Our StarSkate program runs three days a week, with options on both the East and West sides of Saint John. The season runs from October through the end of March.

Where We Skate

• Peter Murray Arena — Monday evenings and Saturday mornings
• Stewart Hurley Arena — Wednesday evenings

Families can choose to register for one, two, or three days per week, depending on what works best for their schedule. Our coaches recommend attending at least two days per week, when possible, as regular participation helps skaters make greater progress throughout the season.

2026–2027 Season

Specific session times and registration dates will be posted once our 2026–2027 ice schedule has been finalized with the City of Saint John.

Registration Fees

Registration fees for the 2026–2027 season have not yet been finalized and will depend on the number of days per week you choose.

As a guide, the 2025–2026 fee for StarSkate one day per week for the full season was $396.30, plus $68.67 in annual Skate Canada and Skate New Brunswick fees. These annual fees are paid only once per skater, so they are not charged again if you register for another program or add another skating day during the same season.

We are working to keep any increase for the 2026–2027 season as small as possible. As a non-profit organization, we work to keep our program fees affordable while covering the costs of ice rentals, coaching, insurance, and program operations.

StarSkate Competitions

StarSkaters are not required to compete at competitions, they are entirely optional. A skater can choose to participate in one, all or none of the competitions for the season. The club and your coach can provide you with specific information for each competition of the season as they come up and you can decide then if you would like to participate.

If a skater wishes to attend competitions, each competition has a registration fee that is paid to the host of the competition. These fees can vary as they are set by the organizers. Additionally, there will be additional coach fees to have your coach accompany your skater at the competition. The coaching fee helps to cover the costs your coach will incur for travel, accommodations, meals, etc. These fees are split between the number of skaters competing at the competition from our club and our coaches try to keep these fees as low as possible. If you have any questions regarding the coach fee(s), please feel free to discuss with your coach prior to competition registration.

StarSkate Assessments

Assessments are tests of various techniques and requirements set by Skate Canada. As Star 1 – Gold skaters are ready for an assessment of specific dances, techniques or requirements, their coach will arrange for the assessment to take place. Each level of StarSkate has a specific list of assessments that must be passed to move on to the next level. There is a Skate Canada fee to compete each of these assessments that gets paid to the Saint John Skating Club directly where it is then passed on to Skate Canada. These fees may vary depending on the specific assessment and will be advised by your coach prior to any testing.
