PowerSkate

The Saint John Skating Club is excited to now offer both Fall and Winter sessions of our PowerSkate program!

PowerSkate is a high-energy program designed specifically for hockey and ringette players looking to take their skating skills to the next level. Building on the foundational skills developed in CanSkate, this program focuses on enhancing balance, control, agility, power, and speed – all key components of effective game play.

Through progressive drills and real-game scenario training, skaters will develop stronger, more confident skating techniques that are essential for success on the ice. All sessions are led by NCCP-certified (National Coaching Certification Program) Skate Canada coaches, ensuring high-quality instruction in a safe and supportive environment.

Eligibility Requirements:
PowerSkate is open to skaters of all ages who meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of at least Stage 4 of CanSkate
    OR
  • Equivalent skating ability, including:
    • Ability to complete two full laps (one forward, one backward) in 1 minute and 15 seconds or less
    • Ability to perform both forward and backward crossovers

If a skater does not yet have the required skills, we recommend registering for CanSkate first to continue building a strong skating foundation before progressing to PowerSkate.

Required Equipment:
Participants must wear hockey skates, a CSA-approved hockey helmet, gloves, and bring a stick. Full hockey or ringette gear is optional but encouraged.

Continued Development:
To keep building their skills, skaters are encouraged to register for multiple sessions of the PowerSkate program, as each session brings them closer to achieving their performance goals on the ice. Skaters may also wish to attend both PowerSkate as well as CanSkate (Stage 5 and up) programs throughout the season for well-rounded skill development and even faster improvement.
