Kim MacVey
Recreational and Competitive Coach
Kim MacVey is a recreational and competitive coach with the Saint John Skating Club, where she also serves as the information contact during CanSkate sessions. Trained in all disciplines, Kim has been coaching for over 40 years, bringing a wealth of experience and passion to every skater she works with.
She began skating at the age of 5½ in Oakville, Ontario. During her pre-teen years, she trained at the Granite Club in Toronto before moving to Saint John, where she has been part of the skating community since 1976. After competing until the early 1980s, Kim transitioned into coaching and has been dedicated to developing new generations of skaters of all levels ever since.
Inspired by her coaches, supportive parents, and a natural ability and passion for skating, Kim turned her early success into a lifelong commitment to the sport. As a competitor, she proudly represented New Brunswick three times as a Junior skater at Nationals and became the first-ever triple Gold Medalist in Atlantic Canada at just 15 years old.
Her coaching career has been equally accomplished. Kim has been recognized nationally with two prestigious awards: the Skate Canada National Award of Excellence for Club and Recreational Coaching and the Award of Excellence for Volunteer Contribution with Skate Canada. Among her most rewarding coaching moments are seeing her first student pass a gold test, guiding multiple skaters to Skate Canada Challenge, and receiving the inaugural National Award of Excellence for Club and Recreational Coaching.
Currently a Nationally Trained Coach, Kim values the success of her skaters—whether recreational or competitive—and believes strongly in patience, approachability, and keeping the joy in hard work. She often describes her own skating journey as a balance of joy in learning, carefree moments on the ice, and the stubborn determination needed to achieve goals. Her advice to young skaters reflects this perspective: “Be patient, and trust your coach—we’ve been there ourselves.”
Kim has also passed her love of skating on to her daughter, Kaitie, who followed in her footsteps and is now the Head Coach of the Saint John Skating Club. Together, they represent both the history and the future of the club, sharing a deep commitment to the skating community in Saint John.
Outside of coaching, Kim carries fond traditions and memories from her skating days, such as pinning her lucky skater charm under her skirt before competitions and tests. Her favorite jumps as a skater were the double flip and double lutz.
Kim’s enduring love for the sport, combined with her determination and experience, continues to inspire skaters to grow, achieve their goals, and find their own success on the ice.
